No more day job…I’m going to self-publish!

Hello there.

My name is Ashley Carlson and as of two weeks ago I no longer have a paying job, because I have decided to pursue writing FULL TIME!

At first, I was like this:

Then, my boyfriend didn’t get the lucrative job we thought he would (I mean, they gave him a uniform, come ON!).

And my car decided to total itself by overheating its engine for the last few weeks, unbeknownst to me–(“Babe, you have to READ the dashboard, that’s what gauges are for,” said the boyfriend, to which I replied “I DON’T PAY ATTENTION TO ANYTHING BUT THE SPEEDOMETER I AM A WOMAN SO THIS IS YOUR FAULT.”)

So NOW I am like:

crying girl

and sometimes this, when the boyfriend is stressed:

sweet dog

The thing is, I do know its going to be okay, for a couple of reasons.

1) I am getting to live my dream of writing full-time right now. Whatever happens, and whether I need to get a job in two months because we have run out of money, or I have to start riding the bus to get around (or just become a recluse, because going outside in Arizona during the summer to wait for a damn bus is not part of my bucket list), at least I tried for a little while to devote myself to my craft.

2) I have learned quite a bit in the last few months of researching, I have the wonderful idea to self-publish!

Partly because of Ksenia Anske, a HUGE idol of mine (please go look at her website immediately for all sorts of amazing information about writing and her self-publishing journey: www.kseniaanske.com), and partly because I am inspired by writers such as Hugh Howey, Chuck Wendig, and Amanda Hocking- all writers who self-published to great success, and give me hope for my own near-future endeavors.

and 3) Because of what F. Scott Fitzgerald said:

f scott quote

I want to live a life I am proud of, and to do that, means quitting a day job I disliked and putting the pressure on to write, write, WRITE!

Never have I had so much time to go inside my little world, to pound out those couple thousand words a day, to feel really excited about what I am creating.

I can’t wait to share it with others, and with the pressures of bills on my shoulders, it’s only created more incentive for me to write something that people will love, and want to share.

If you are out there, and considering taking the plunge, can I just say, DO IT. Obviously there are bills to pay, and others have families to feed and support, so I understand that. But, as Ksenia Anske says, when you take that next step, and share yourself and your art with other people, the most beautiful things can happen.

Because I don’t believe that God, and people, will let you fall.

So as I write here, and share my thoughts, experiences, struggles, books I loved to read, lessons that were hard to learn, I would love to hear about your own thoughts about writing, and about life in general.

Now, I’ve got 3,000 words to write on my WIP! Wish me luck,
